2. John2 Berry (Thomas1) was born Abt. 1753 in King and Queen County, Va., and died 1810 in Hopkins Co., Ky.. He married (1) Unknown Berry. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown. He married (2) Elizabeth LNU Abt. 1770 in Virginia. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown.
Notes for John Berry:
In the Mechlenburg County, Va. census for 1782, List of Henry Walker (Katherine B. Elliot, Early Settlers, Mechlenburg County Va., Vol. 22, page 212,) John Berry and his first five children were listed. He owned 3 slaves.
On the 1787 census of the Mechlenburg Co., Va. census Tax List B (Vol. 1, p. 564, Yantis and Love), John also has 3 horses and 6 head of cattle.
By 1788 the Berry family, Thomas Sr. and his children, and John and his children, had removed to Mercer Co., Ky. No evidence that Thomas' oldest son, William was with them. After posting surety on January 6, 1790, John's oldest daughter, Nancy, married Daniel McGary (January 9, 1790) in Mercer Co., Ky. (Taken from actual marriage record filed in 1790 drawer in Mercer Co. Clerk's office in Harrodsburg, Ky., attested by Carl Young, Clerk in 1962)
John Berry was made Justice of the Peace in Jessamine Co., Ky. Feb. 25, 1799, one month after the formation of the County, in January, 1799, according to "History of Jessamine County, Kentucky" by B.H. Young, 1898. He was ordered by the Court, as following, February 27, 1799:
Viewers Appointed: Ordered that William Shreves, John Berry and Minor Young being first duly sworn be appointed to view the best and most convenient way for a road to run from William Shreves' mill in a direction to Boons Station as far as the county line extends and make report of the conveniences and inconveniences that will result as well to individuals as to the Public if said road be opened to the April Court.
His first six children may have been born of another but unknown wife. The last four are Elizabeth's. (Florence hasn't checked this out.)
He died intestate in 1810, at age 57. Samuel Woodson was appointed Guardian for Thomas and John Berry, on April 5, 1811. Hopkins County Book A, page 122. His daughter Mahala was made Ward of Daniel McGary, husband to her older half-sister Nancy, Hopkins Co., Will Book #1. page 105
Notes for Elizabeth LNU:
Compiler believes Elizabeth's last name is either Gaskin or Woodson. When her husband John died Sam Woodson was appointed guardian of his minor children, James Gaskin and Thomas Berry. Samuel Woodson's sister Elizabeth was married to George Berry. Gaskins and Woodsons are known to have lived in North Carolina and later in Clark County/Mercer County, KY at the same time John Berry was there. Nothing verified.
