He married Elizabeth Ann Dysart September 20, 1855 in Hallsville, Boone Cco., MO. She was born August 03, 1829 in Pulaski Co., KY, and died May 08, 1899 in Brown's Station, Boone Co., MO.

Death of Lewis G. Berry
At his home near Brown's Station, Boone Co., MO on Friday, March 29, 1889, after an illness of two weeks of pneumonia fefer, Mr. Lewis Gardner Berry, aged 69 years, 3 months and 16 days. Deceased was born Dec. 13, 1819 in Clark Co., KY and came to Boone county with his parents, William and Margaret Berry, in 1832, who located on the farm where the subject of this sketch died. While yet a boy, all that which goes to make a true and noble character, manifested itself in Lewis Berry, and he was the pride of the household and an example in the neighborhood, worthy of the efforts of the young men to emulate. And what he now leaves his widow is but the hire of honest toil- his parents having been relieved of their competence through the environments attending obligations for friends, were unable (had he desired it) to help him. This honest toil characterized his whole life, and yet with the many who hold or have held public office, there naturally, perhaps, grows up a feeling of dislike, for reasons or without reasons. But with 'Squire' Berry, who had been a justice of the peace for twenty years or more, it was noticeable different, for he died at peace with and was highly respected by all who know him, and none standing higher in the community in which he lived - and all realize the loss of an honest, upright, industrious christian neighbor and citizen. It was but a few years ago that the STATESMAN published a list of those who were of the original subscribers to this paper when it was first started and who had continuously followed it with their encouragement. And it is with feelings akin to both pleasure and grief we find Mr. Berry's name among the forty-two then published, and of that number there are only nineteen left this side of the great river. Deceased married Sept. 20, 1855, his wife being Elizabeth Prather, who survives him with seven of the eight children born to them, all of the seven living in this county except Mrs. G.S. Brown of Clinton county, who was at his bedside during his last hours, and all are happy in the belief tha the father and husband has gone to his reward - the reward which awaits those who die in the Lord. Besides these hs leaves two brothers and three sisters: S.W. Berry, Hallsville, J. H. Berry, Gold Hill, Nevada, Mrs. Amos Hulen, Randolph county, Mrs. John Jones, Hallsville, and Miss Ann Berry, of Columbia. It was therefore quite appropriate that the loss of an exemplary christian gentleman, honest and industrious neighbor and citizen, who had lived true to the faith as a Missionary Baptist for fifty years, could call out such a large concourse of people at Gilead Church last Sunday where his remains were interred, after a most appropriate discourse by Rev. W.R. Wiggington, of Centralia, and the impressive ceremonies of the Masonic fraternity. Peace to his ashes, and may his memory be ever fresh and green in the minds of the many who know him but to honor and esteem his noble worth.

280. Alonzo Ragsdale5 Berry (James Warren4, James Gaskin3, John2, Thomas1) was born August 23, 1861 in Dade Co., Mo., and died November 25, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Eliza Jeanette Evans December 22, 1892 in Probably Centerville, Davis Co., Utah, daughter of Jonathan Evans and Josephine Harman. She was born January 14, 1868 in Centerville, Ut, USA, and died November 30, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Ut. USA.
Notes for Alonzo Ragsdale Berry:
Alonzo was counted in the 1870 Census of Center Twp., Greenfield P.O., Dade County, Mo., but not in the 1860 Census. The 1870 Census was taken Sept. 15th and 16th. He is listed as twelve years old. Alonzo and his entire family were living in the household of his father's uncle, James Finley, suggesting that they had not yet rebuilt a dwelling on their own farm, which was destroyed during the burning of Dadeville, in October, 1863.
His birthday is listed as August 28th, 1861 on his Certificate of Death. His father, James Warren Berry, is listed as born in Ireland, and his mother, Adeline McMillan, as born in Ireland also. Alonzo is listed as born in Hopkinsville, Ky. The Certificate of Death was filed by his brother-in-law, William Evans in Salt Lake City, Utah on Dec. 3, 1921. Places of birth for Alonzo's father and mother are proved to be in error by Dade County, Mo. Census records and other subsequent research.. The cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis. The L.D.S. files list his date of birth as August 21, 1863. This was filed by his brother-in-law Frederick Evans and is in error.
He is listed as one of the "Schollars", at the Union Sabath School Minutes in July, 1874, In Dadeville, Dade Co., Mo.
Alonzo's older brother, John, was listed in the 1870 census, Dade County, Mo. as 13 years of age. He is listed in the 1860 census as 3 years old. The 1870 Census is probably correct for John, and wrong for Alonzo. The Census for Golden City Twp., Barton Co., MO., 1880, lists Alonzo as 18 years old, and born in Missouri.
Alonzo appears in the Census taken June 9, 1900, in Enumeration Dist. # 141, Park City, Park Precinct. born Aug. 1860, and 39 years old. His place of birth was listed as Kentucky, his father as Germany, and his mother as Ireland. He was a teamster for the mining company.
It would appear that he chose to keep his origins obfuscated. Dade County, and Barton County, Missouri, his last place of residence before he left home, was the home of the Earp brothers, William Clarke Quantrill, the guerrilla chief of Quantrill's Raiders infamy, Kinch West and his gang, and several other individuals popularly labeled bushwackers, outlaws or gunslingers. Additionally there was no comfort in Utah for Missourians, as the Mormons remembered the fate of their ancestors in Missouri several decades earlier.
Florence is suggesting that he went west with his brother John, sometime after the death of his mother Addie, probably with his father's brother John H. Berry. This is in keeping with statements made by Alonzo's daughter Josephine, as told to her by her father. His uncle John H. Berry returned from Dayton, Washington Territory to Dade County, in 1881, where he signed a receipt for his portion of his father's estate (James Gaskin Berry), February 27th and May, 17, 1881. I believe that John H. Berry took his young nephews with him to Oregon/Washington, and from there Alonzo Berry worked capturing wild mustangs in Canada and northern Idaho for shipment from Payette, Idaho to Layton, Utah, by way of the Ogden Short Line Railroad. In Layton the horses were delivered to William Himes Evans. This William Evans employed his nephews, sons of his brother Jonathan Benner Evans, in the breaking, training and sale of the horses. Alonzo met his wife, Eliza Jeannette Evans at that time.
After his marriage to Eliza Evans he moved to Park City, Summit County, Utah, where he worked as a teamster foreman at the mine, along with several brothers-in-law.
He died in Bingham Canyon City, Utah, in December, 1921.
Notes for Eliza Jeanette Evans:
Eliza Jeanette (Nettie) appears in June 9th, 1900 Census for Park Precinct, Park City, Dist. #141 with her husband Alonzo and her daughter, Josephine.
Obituary of Eliza Jennette Evans Berry from Daughters f the Utah Pioneers Obituary Scrapbook, December 1, 1934 (Probably taken from Salt Lake Tribune) "She was born January 14, 1867, at Centerville. (Florence's note: Has to be 1868 - see birth dates for siblings Sarah Josephine and Salisbury Monroe Evans), a daughter of Jonathan Benner and Josephine Smith Evans, both early Utah pioneers.
