Notes for Edwin Gardner Berry:
From : A History of Kentucky Baptists from 1769 to 1885, by H.J. Spencer, as quoted in Berry Bulletin, October, November, December, 1995, Vol. 10, Number 4: "Edwin Gardner Berry was pastor of New Castle Church for a short time. He is a native of Clark County, Kentucky, and was born February 1, 1801. His father was Lewis Berry and his mother (Agnes Rash) was a sister of Elder Willliam Rash. His parents were in rather limited circumstances, as to this world's goods, and he received a very limited education. But being fond of music, and having an excellent voice for singing, he obtained sufficient knowledge of that science to be able to teach its rudiments. He was married to Ellen, daughter of John Strode of Clark County, November 21, 1821. This young woman made him a most excellent wife. She was a very extraordinary business woman, and to her, no doubt, he owed his success in life, as much as to his own energy and prudence. She became the mother of eighteen children, fourteen of whom were raised and became members of Baptist churches. In addition to this she and her husband raised and educated not less than four orphans. This remarkable couple began life very poor, and Mr. Berry did, perhaps, as much preaching as an average of his contemporaries in the ministry, yet, without entering into speculation, and by mere dint of economy and industry, they raised and educated eighteen children, gave such of them as married a comfortable start in life, and had left for their supoort in old age, a fortune perhaps of $25,000."

Notes for Horace Pritchett:
From: Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle and Kniffin, 2nd ed., 1885, Hopkins C. (He) was born June 15, 1804 in Spottsylvania County, Va. At the age of four years he came with his parents to Garrard County, Ky. In 1819 they moved to Hopkins County and engaged in farming. At the age of twenty-three our subject rented a farm, on which he lived one year, then purchased a farm of fifty acres, about two miles east of Madisonville, and as his means would allow added other lands, and now owns 300 acres. He continued to reside on that farm until 1851, when he moved to town and built the first steam flour mill here. This he sold after running it five years. He attached a carding machine to this mill, which he still owns. He owns another carding machine which is run by his son. He owns eight houses and lots, also several vacant lots in Madisonville, and has paid security debts to the amount of about $5,000. Mr. Pritchett commenced life without any assistance, and as a reward of honesty, integrity, and strict attention to business, he has succeeded in acquiring this valuable property. Mr. Pritchett has neither sought nor held any office, beside that of magistrate when on his farm. He was married, in 1827, to Lucy Goodloe, of Kentucky. Five children have blessed this union - three sons and two daughters. He and his wife are life-long and devoted member of the Christian Church, and are the only surviving members of the church with which they first became members. Mr. Pritchett is known as the daddy of prohibition. At the breaking out of the war he owned ten or twelve slaves, but voted for the abolition of slavery and has always voted the Republican ticket.

He married Elizabeth Ann Dobyns October 05, 1836 in Hopkins Co., KY, daughter of Edward Dobyns and Sarah Mott. She was born 1814, and died Unknown.
Notes for John Edmerson Jack Goodloe:
There is a record that Jack Goodloe married Elizabeth Ann Dobyns, daughter of Edward Dobyns and Sarah Mott, in Hopkins County, KY., on October 5, 1836, with Rev. John Bourland officiating. This record says that Elizabeth Ann was born in 1824, which would make her mother, Sarah Mott, born in February 18, 1775, 49 years of age when Elizabeth Ann was born. Further, if Elizabeth Ann's dob is indeed 1824, then she would have been just 12 when she married Jack Goodloe. They were said to have had one child, Mary Waller, (1843-1868). Search is being made for document recording consent to marry under age.
Records also show second marriage for Jack Goodloe, on January 2, 1849, to Elizabeth Pettus, in Hopkins Co., KY. She was born in Tennessee.

Notes for John Warren Rash:
Information supp;lied by Charles Rice Bourland, 2001.
He was about 13 when his parents moved to Hopkins Co., KY. He learned to farm from his father, who lived along Flat Creek. When he was 18 or 19 his mother died and his father married Hannah Carter. After his father died in 1829, he rented land from the estate and farmed it. Hopkins Co., Deed Book 5, page 406 shows that John W. Goodloe and Wealthy, his wife, sold 86 acres on Flat Creek to John W. Rash for $200 in 1830. The boundaries listed on the deed show that the land adjoined property owned by Benjamin L. Todd, William Davis, William Lovings, and Martin Sisk. John W. and Wealthy Goodloe were probably related to John Warren Rash's mother's family by marriage. His mother's sister, Elizabeth Berry, married Henry Goodloe. He was 25 and Sardenia four months shy of 16 when they married. At 25 John Warren Rash was older than many men marrying for the first time. But we can guess that it took him a little longer to set up his farming business because of the death of his parents. The terms of Stephen Rash's Will may have been difficult on the older children since they would not rec eive any inheitance until the youngest child, Patsy, reached majority.
October 1, 1836 James G. Berry and Mary his wife sold 100 acres along Flat Creek to John W. Rash for $300.00. This would make his land holdings in 1836 186 acres. James G. Berry was John Warren Rash's uncle, the brother of his mother, Patsy Berry.
Sardinia K. Todd Rash died March 23, 1841, only 16 days after Charles W. was born, most likely from the complications of childbirth. She would have been 26 years old in April. She is buried next to her parents at Flat Creek cemetery.
John Warren Rash married Mary Ann Slaton May 18, 1842, in Hopkins Co., KY. He was 38, she was 21. Her parents were James and Chelly Slaton. Of the children born to him and Mary Ann, but one survived past the age of 21. They must have been in ill health. Emsley Bobbitt, who married Mary Rash also lost several children.
He received in 1847, a settlement from the Benjamin Todd (father-in-law) estate, along with Charles P. Todd, Thomas B. Todd and Addison Pritchett.
He can be found in the Hopkins Co. censuses for 1840, 1850, and 1870.

Notes for James Warren Berry:
1870 Census, Dade Co., Mo. Centre Twp. Greenfield P.O. shows James W. Berry is living with John M. Finley, 48, from Arkansas. (His cousin, son of William Finley, brother to his mother, Nancy Mary Finley). John M. Finley must have been single at that time because there are neither wife nor children listed for him. James Berry is a farm laborer. He is listed as about 46 years old. His wife, Adeline, is listed as about 45. Children: John R. 13,; Alonzo,12; Mary, 7; Sally, 5; and Walter, 3; James' place of birth listed as Ky., Adeline, Tennessee. All children born in Missouri. His home, built on the property verified by the B.L.M. was burned either by Confederate Troops during the sacking of Dadeville in 1863 or by the notorious outlaw Kinch West, in 1864 when he and his gang set fire to what was left of the town of Dadeville.
One of these two versions of where James Warren Berry died may some day be verified.
Transcribed exactly from hand -written notes taken during interview with Howard Helm Berry, nephew of James Warren Berry, and son of Thomas Helm Berry, 1969. Interview by son of Betty Babcock. ' Warren Berry died late 1890's. Horse Creek Farms close to Jericho, Mo., N.W. corner of Cedar County. Agness lived there. (Agness Rash Berry, Warren's Aunt by marriage to Lewis, brother of James Gaskin Berry?) Warren had three sons. Wife had passed away. Adeline McMillan - died of T.B. Sold farm near Greenfield, got cash, good price, gave boy (s?) the money. Left early winter never heard of again. Or the other version: Warren died in Dadeville on farm that Amanda had owned. (His sister Margaret Amanda Berry Gray).
Warren Berry first appears in Dade County Missouri in the 1850 Census, 26 years old, born in Kentucky, his wife is Nancy, 20 years old, born in Tennessee. (page 10). This is not the same wife as Mary Adeline McMillen. This may be the wife that Josephine Berry talked of, whom her father Alonzo said went back to the plantation in North Carolina. No further information on her.
The 1860 Federal Census of Dade County, Mo. Morgan Twp. shows James W. Berry, age 35 years, born Kentucky, his wife, Mary A., 34 years old, born Tennessee, and son John B. (R). 3 years old, born Missouri. (page 66). On page 71, same census his brother Edwin Lewis Berry and family appear, and his father James Gaskin Berry, 67, his mother Mary, 61 with his youngest brother, Thomas H. age 18.
No marriage verification has been found for James Warren Berry, either with Nancy, sometime before 1850, or Mary, sometime between 1850 and 1858 when son John R. was born.
James W. Berry had two land patents issued, found in the Bureau of Land Management General Land Office. First, Document No. 9597 for 40 acres, January l, 1850, a Cash Entry Sale, Patent Description MO5340__.256. This was described as Aliquot Parts NENW, Sec/Blk 32/, Twp. 31-N, Range 27-W, Fract. Sect. N, 5th Principal Meridian (Lockwood). Second, Document No. 22579 for 40 acres, dated June 1, 1859, a cash entry sale, Patent Description MO5590__.190, Aliquot Parts NENE, Sec/Blk 8/, Twp 32-N, Range 25-W, Fract. Sec. James Warren Berry served in Company 'E' 76th Cav. Enrolled Missouri Militia under Captain James E. Kirby. The unit was organized September 16th, 1864. There were 103 men enrolled. James Warren was a Corporal.
He appears on a list of members of the Union Sabbath School, organized in Dadeville in July of 1874. His wife Addie, his mother Mary, and his brother T.H. were listed as teachers and his children were listed as 'schollars' The school continued through September of that year.
Sometime between 1874 and 1880 James and his family moved to Golden City, Barton County, Missouri, which is just west of the boundary with Dade County. He appears on the census for that county in 1880. His wife and all five children were listed with him at that time. A letter was sent by Mary Berry in Golden city, Barton County, Mo., to a childhood friend, MissTella Fort, in Madison, Kansas, dated September 26, 1880, stating that her (Mary's) mother Addie had been very ill and that brother John, in Madison, had been sent for.
No place or date of death for James W. Berry has been established.
Notes for Mary Adeline McMillen:
She appears in the Golden City Twp., Barton County, Missouri Census for 1880, states she is 54 years old and born in Tennessee. Her father was born in Tennessee, and her mother was born in South Carolina.
She appears as Addie Bery on a list of teachers at the Union Sabbath School, organized in Dadeville, between July and September, 1874. Also on that list as teachers were her mother-in-law Mary Bery and her brother-law T.H. Bery. Her husband and her children appeared as 'schollars' on the membership list for the Sabbath School.
All accounts say she died of T.B. A letter from daughter Mary to her childhood friend Miss Tella Fort, living in Madison, Greenwood County, Kansas, dated January, 10th, 1880 states that her mother was "in better health than she was in a long time."
Another letter, dated September 28, 1880 from Mary to Tella states that her mother Addie had been very ill and they had written to John (brother), who was in Madison Kansas, to come home. No more precise date for her death has been established.

Notes for John Randolph Berry:
In Idaho Census of 1900 (T-623-232) Boise Co., Omega Prect. Ed. 33, Sheet 4B, John Berry was listed as 42 years old, Head of household, farmer, born in Missouri, Father born in Kentucky, Mother in Tennessee, born Oct., 1857, single.
In Idaho Census of 1910, Boise County, Pg. 307B (T614-222), John Berry was 52 years old, a border in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Williams. His occupation was listed as 'salesman'.
In 1920 Census for Boise Co. (T-625-294), McCall Prict. Ed. 177, sheet 1 line 12, he was listed as 62 years old. Occupation listed as 'clerk'. Family Bible, in possession of Howard H. Berry, said he worked at Morris and White, a hardware store, between 1916-1919.
His obituary appeared in Fayette Lake Star, June 30, 1938. It stated he died at the Veteran's Hospital in Boise, Idaho, although no indication of military service has been found. Perhaps he was engaged in military action against Indians at some time. He had been hospitalized since January 15th of that same year, as a result of a broken hip, the result of a fall while doing janitorial service at the local forest office. He was 80 years old. Another item on the same page recorded that Clyde Bar and a party of men from the Bar-Bel Ranch arrived safely home after a hazardous journey, trailing 100 head of horses from the Canadian border to McCall.
Mary L. Berry was assigned Administratrix of his estate, July 29, 1938, Valley County Probate Record, FHL 1502889, Item 2, p. 87. His estate consisted of one acre lot, Number 4, Section 9, tWP. 18, Value: $1,000.
An interview with Howard Helm Berry, son of Thomas Helm Berry by Betty Sanders Babcock, in1969: John R. Berry was given substantial cash money, the proceeds from the sale of property, by James Warren Berry. He left early the next Winter. His father never heard of him again. Note: He appears in the 1880 Census with his father and other family members in Golden City Twp., Barton County, MO. Age listed as 22 years. Florence believes that he went west to Oregon/Washington with his uncle John Berry, about 1881. See notes for Alonzo R. Berry.
It is unknown how he got to Idaho, but speculation that he went first to Oregon, where his Aunt Nancy Tatom's children were living when James Gaskin Berry's Will was probated in 1881. (Florence's note: I'm speculating that John H. Berry, James Warren Berry's oldest brother, was in Oregon since 1859, when he took his last herd of cattle to California.) The community of Hubbard Oregon, was settled by Hubbards from Christian and Hopkins Counties in Kentucky. All of James Gaskin Berry's children, except Thomas Helm Berry, were born in Hopkins County, Ky., and James Gaskin Berry's family still lived there. Hubbard is about 10 miles from Silverton, Oregon, where John's future wife Mary Hubbard was born, and about 25 miles from Independence, where Nancy Berry Tatom's daughters lived after Nancy died.
He went to Idaho as a single man and tried to make living raising and racing horses. John caught wild horses, brought down from Canada. The horses were shipped by way of the Oregon Short-Line Railroad, from Payette Lakes area to Layton, Utah where William Himes Evans raised and trained horses, and sold them, along with the help of his nephew, William Evans and some of William's brothers. (See Notes for William Himes Evans). At some time John must have failed and lost money in this venture. His last employment ended when he fell and broke his hip while doing janitorial work at the age of 80. He was employed by the Forestry Service.
He has no known issue, and no known additional marriages.

From History of Dade County and its People
"There is probably no better known and more loved man in north Dade County than Uncle Tom Berry, the subject of this sketch. He was born in the county on the fine farm he now owns June 17th, 1841, over three-quarters of a century ago, and is proud to be a citizen of good old Dade County. His father, James G. Berry, was a native of Kentucky, where he early married Miss Mary Finley, who was born in South Carolina....."
"Thomas H. Berry was given 160 acres of good land by his father and took care of both his parents in their declining years. He was married October 28th, 1883, to Miss Berdit Samantha Smith, a native of Cass County, Missouri, and born Dec. 4th, 1850, a daughter of James Monroe and Cynthia Ann (Morris) Smith, natives of Tennesee and Kentucky, respectively. We settled in what was known as the "Great Bear Rough". We caught four cubs. I worked on the farm, paid off father's security debts; had to walk three miles to school. A sow was given me; raised a litter of pigs; sold 1,200 pounds of pork for $12; bought a fiddle with $4; borrowed $2 from our old servant Aleck, and bought four calves for $10; broke them and had two yoke of oxen. In 1842, went to Santa Fe; was hunter and cook for the party; was once near being capture by the Comanches; returned with a pack-mule and $55; became a clerk in a store at $25 a month. In the spring of 1849 I went to California with brother William, John G. Haydon, Wm. Davenport, and R. P. Wood. In Humboldt Desert we were lost; R.P. Wood became crazy for a time; Davenport dashed forward, and returned with water; wintered at Hang-town; went to Sacramento; was offered $350 per month to clerk, but declined it. potatoes sold at $1 per pound, and eggs at $1 each; the proceeds of my 1,200 pounds of pork would have bought a dozen eggs; our teams came through in good order. I engaged in mining, and made $1,500; went into the merchantile business with L.J. Wood and J.M. Clay as my partners; went to San Francisco, and returned with stock of goods; sold them at great profit. My brother William died, and in discouragement I came home".
