Notes for Sebastian Gries:
Citizen of the Village and fisherman in Sandhofen.  Had a house built under the mountain (down in the village) in 1697.  "Gemeinsmann oder Burger und Fischer in Sandhofen (Hat 1697 ein Haus gebaut"unten im Dorf").  Copied and notarized from Church records by Pfarrer Ottjorg Albert, Jan 8, 1991.   The building of a house in 1697 was an accomplishment significant enough that it was noted in the church records.  The date may be in error because the church records show his date of death as 1684/85, or, more likely, his date of death is wrong.

Citizen of the city in Sandhofen.  "Gemeinsmann oder Burger in Sandhofen.   Copies and notarized from Church records by Pfarrer Orrjorg Albert, Jan 8, 1991.  "Anno 1705 von Deserteur auf dem Fahr (Gewanname) in die Hand geschossen"  In the year 1705 he was shot in the hand by a fleeing deserter.

USA.

Notes for Anna Margaretha Buchler:
"Sie zog (1764) nach Amerika mit 48Pfl =Gulden). "  She moved to America with 48 Gold Pieces.  From Church records, copied and notarized by Pfarrer Ottjorg Albert, in Sandhofen, Jan 8, 1991.   Her husband  died in 1762.  She brought her 10 year old son, Johann Deitrich Gries with her.  She came aboard the Hero, from Rotterdam to Philadelphia in 1764.  The passenger list for the Hero listed Lenhard Buchler, Peter Buchler, probably  brothers, and Johann Georg Weymer and Peter Scheide, probably uncles.  A Johann Gress was listed as passenger also.  Could have been her son, Johann Deitrich Gries.  Female passengers were not listed.

U.S.A..  He married Maria Magdalena Graff Abt. 1779, daughter of John Graff and Esther Leibrock.  She was born July 09, 1760 in Reading. Pa. U.S.A., and died October 23, 1841 in Womelsdorf, Pa., USA.

Notes for Johann Dietrich Gries:
He came to America with  his widowed Mother in 1764, aboard the Hero, from Rotterdam in1764.  His name was spelled "Gress".  Also aboard the Hero on that voyage were Johann Georg Weymer, Lenhard Buchler and Peter Scheide, spelled both "Schad" and "Scheid" in the  church records from Sandhofen.  These three named individuals were relatives, probably uncles and a brother of  Anna Margaretha Buchler, mother of Johann Deitrich Gries.  No female passengers were listed on the ship.  Johann was 10 years old when this voyage was undertaken.  The Hero landed in Philadelphia, Saturday, October 27, 1864.

Notes for Catherine Kaiser:
According to the records of the Tulpenhocken Trinity Reformed Church, Jackson Twp. Lebanon, Pa., the marriage was solemnized by the reverend William Hendel, then pastor of that church.  Her parents came from Mannheim, Germany.  Catherine's uncle, Theodore Metzger, who was reputed to be very wealthy, died in Germany without any children.  The Kaisers were the only heirs.  A lawyer whom they sent to Germany to look after their interests never returned.

There is an And/?/   Keyser who landed at Philadelphia, aboard the Edinburgh, Monday, September 16th, 1751.  Aboard the same ship was John. Wilhelm Graef, grandfather of Jacob Gries, Catherine's husband.  Also a Johann Friedrich Graef.

Pa., daughter of John Myers.  She was born February 17, 1805 in Myerstown, Lebanon Co., Pa., and died August 1882 in Reading, Pa..

Notes for William Gries:
1822 graduated from Medical Department, University of Pennsylvania.  Practiced medicine in Womelsdorf until 1831 when he sold his property, and prepared to go to Ohio with his brother, Jacob.  He broke his hip shortly thereafter, and decided to stay in an urban enviroment, so settled in Reading Pa.  Assisted in the organization of Berks Co., Medical Society, built the house in Reading later known as the Connard mansion.

Was an Architect in Philadelphia.  In Civil War he served as major in the 104th Pennsylvania volunteers.  At the battle of Fair Oaks, he was mortally wounded while trying to save the colors of his regiment.
