Obituary of Eliza Jennette Evans Berry from Daughters f the Utah Pioneers Obituary Scrapbook, December 1, 1934 (Probably taken from Salt Lake Tribune) "She was born January 14, 1867, at Centerville. Mrs. Berry had been a member of the Daughters of Utah Pineers and during recent years had devoted much of her time to Red Cross work. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. R. I. Ferrell; seven brothers, William B. Evans, Centerville; M.S. Evans, Seattle; J.T., S.B. and F.W. Evans, Salt Lake City; Dr. R.T. Evans, Los Angeles, and George E. Evans, Centerville, and two sisters, Mrs. S.A. Burton. Temple City, Cal., and Miss May Evans, Centerville. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. in the L.D.S. First ward chapel by Bishop Wesley E. Tingey. Burial will take place in the Centerville cemetery."
Also: Mrs. Eliza Jeannette Evans Berry, 67, widow of Alonzo R. Berry and an active Red Cross worker of recent years, died Friday, at 2 a.m., at the home of her brother, J.T. Evans, 601 Ninth East street, of a throat ailment." The rest is repeat of first obituary.

Burial: Unknown, Centerville, Utah
Cause of Death: Death Cetificate says paralysis of Pharynx and Larynx
Notes for Alonzo Ragsdale Berry:
It is still not certain when Alonzo left home. He was counted in the 1870 Census of Center Twp., Greenfield P.O., Dade County, Mo., but not in the 1860 Census. The 1870 Census was taken Sept. 15th and 16th. He is listed as twelve years old. Alonzo and his entire family were living in the household of his father's uncle, James Finley, suggesting that they had not yet rebuilt a dwelling on their own farm, which was destroyed during the burning of Dadeville, in October, 1863.
His birthday is listed as August 28th, 1861 on his Certificate of Death. His father, James Warren Berry, is listed as born in Ireland, and his mother, Adeline McMillan, as born in Ireland also. Alonzo is listed as born in Hopkinsville, Ky. The Certificate of Death was filed by his brother-in-law, William Evans in Salt Lake City, Utah on Dec. 3, 1921. Places of birth for Alonzo's father and mother are proved to be in error by Dade County, Mo. Census records and other subsequent research.. The cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis. The L.D.S. files list his date of birth as August 21, 1863. This was filed by his brother-in-law Frederick Evans. It is probably in error.
Alonzo's older brother, John, was listed in the 1870 census, Dade County, Mo. as 13 years of age. He is listed in the 1860 census as 3 years old. The 1870 Census is probably correct for John, and wrong for Alonzo. If John left home with money from the sale of some of James Warren Berry's property in Greenville, the date of that transaction (1873) would suggest he was at least 16 when he left. Alonzo may have gone with him, but it is doubtful.
Alonzo appears in the Census taken June 9, 1900, in Enumeration Dist. # 141, Park City, Park Precinct. born Aug. 1860, and 39 years old. His place of birth was listed as Kentucky, his father as Germany, and his mother as Ireland. It would appear that he chose to keep his origins obfuscated. He was a teamster for the mining company.

Notes for Hannah Amanda Evans:
There is a family story which bears repeating here: that during the Great Fire in Park City, in 1898, Amanda was a young woman. Her family kept the stables for Park City, furnishing horses for various purposes, housing and caring for them. The stables were at the top of the Canyon, almost out of the town. When the fire began, it quickly spread up the canyon towards the stables, and because it was such a narrow canyon, as is true in most mining towns, the flames quickly spread from one side of the street to the other, engulfing the entire town. Amanda, in her nightgown, barefoot, hair flying (I always imagined she had a white lace night-cap, as well), tied the horses together, blindfolded the two lead horses, (I always imagined that she tore strips from the bottom of her night-gown for this) and stampeded them through the flaming street, down the Canyon, to the flat below town. (Toward what later became Kimball's Junction.) She thus saved a large number of horses.
During the last few months of her life she suffered a stroke, and was cared for by Josephine Ferrell, daughter of her cousin, Eliza Jennette Evans Berry, first in Josephine's home on 9th East, in Salt Lake City, and later in her own home, on 12th East, in Salt Lake City. Josephine and her large family bought and occupied the big red brick Kimball home on 12th East and 2nd South, until 1953. Amanda was about 70 years of age when she died.
