She was born Abt. 1826 in Tennessee, and died Bef. 1875 in Dade Co., Mo..
Notes for James Warren Berry:
1870 Census, Dade Co., Mo. Centre Twp. Greenfield P.O. shows James W. Berry is living with John M. Finley, 48, from Arkansas. (His cousin, son of William Finley, brother to his mother, Nancy Mary Finley). John M. Finley must have been single at that time because there are neither wife nor children listed for him. James Berry is a farm laborer. He is listed as about 46 years old. His wife, Adeline, is listed as about 45. Children: John R. 13,; Alonzo,12; Mary, 7; Sally, 5; and Walter, 3; James' place of birth listed as Ky., Adeline, Tennessee. All children born in Missouri. There is no evidence that James Warren Berry ever again maintained a household of his own. His own home, built on the property verified by the B.L.M. was burned either by Confederate Troops during the sacking of Dadeville, or by the notorious outlaw Kinch West, in 1864 when he and his gang set fire to what was left of the town of Dadeville.
One of these two versions of where James Warren Berry died may some day be verified.
Transcribed exactly from hand -written notes taken during interview with Howard Helm Berry, nephew of James Warren Berry, and son of Thomas Helm Berry, 1969. Interview by son of Betty Babcock. ' Warren Berry died late 1890's. Horse Creek Farms close to Jericho, Mo., N.W. corner of Cedar County. Agness lived there. (Agness Rash Berry, Warren's Aunt by marriage to Lewis, brother of James Gaskin Berry?) Warren had three sons. Wife had passed away. Adeline McMillan - died of T.B. Sold farm near Greenfield, got cash, good price, gave boy the money. Left early winter never heard of again. Warren died in Dadeville on farm that Amanda had owned. (His sister Margaret Amanda Berry Gray).
Warren Berry first appears in Dade County Missouri in the 1850 Census, 26 years old, born in Kentucky, his wife is Nancy, 20 years old, born in Tennessee. (page 10).dwelling 147, family 152.
The 1860 Federal Census of Dade County, Mo. Morgan Twp. shows James W. Berry, age 35 years, born Kentucky, his wife, Mary A., 34 years old, born Tennessee, and son John B. (R). 3 years old, born Missouri. (page 66). On page 71, same Census his brother Edwin Lewis Berry and family appear, and his father James Gaskin Berry, 67, his mother Mary, 61 and his youngest brother, Thomas H. age 18.
No marriage verification has been found for James Warren Berry, either with Nancy, sometime before 1850, or Mary, sometime between 1850 and 1858 when son John R. was born.
James W. Berry had two land patents issued, found in the Bureau of Land Management General Land Office. First, Document No. 9597 for 40 acres, January l, 1850, a Cash Entry Sale, Patent Description MO5340__.256. This was described as Aliquot Parts NENW, Sec/Blk 32/, Twp. 31-N, Range 27-W, Fract. Sect. Children of James Berry and Mary McMillen are:
+ 130 i. Alonzo Ragsdale22 Berry, born August 23, 1861 in Dade Co., Mo.; died November 25, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
131 ii. John Randolph Berry, born October 1858 in Dade Co., Mo.; died June 29, 1938 in McCall, Valley Co., Idaho. He married Mary Louise Hubbard July 23, 1911 in Boise, Idaho; born February 09, 1859 in Silverton, Oregon; died October 07, 1949 in Emmett, Idaho.
Notes for John Randolph Berry:
In Idaho Census of 1900 (T-623-232) Boise Co., Omega Prect. Ed. 33, Sheet 4B, John Berry was listed as 42 years old, Head of household, farmer, born in Missouri, Father born in Kentucky, Mother in Tennessee, born Oct., 1857, single.
In Idaho Census of 1910, Boise County, Pg. 307B (T614-222), John Berry was 52 years old, a border in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Williams. His occupation was listed as 'salesman'.
In 1920 Census for Boise Co. (T-625-294), McCall Prict. Ed. 177, sheet 1 line 12, he was listed as 62 years old. Occupation listed as 'clerk'. Family Bible, in possession of Howard H. Berry, said he worked at Morris and White, a hardware store, between 1916-1919.
His obituary appeared in Fayette Lake Star, June 30, 1938. It stated he died at the Veteran's Hospital in Boise, Idaho, although no indication of military service has been found. Perhaps he was engaged in military action against Indians at some time. He had been hospitalized since January 15th of that same year, as a result of a broken hip, the result of a fall while doing janitorial service at the local forest office. He was 80 years old. Another item on the same page recorded that Clyde Bar and a party of men from the Bar-Bel Ranch arrived safely home after a hazardous journey, trailing 100 head of horses from the Canadian border to McCall.
Mary L. Berry was assigned Administratrix of his estate, July 29, 1938, Valley County Probate Record, FHL 1502889, Item 2, p. 87. His estate consisted of one acre lot, Number 4, Section 9, tWP. 18, Value: $1,000.
An interview with Howard Helm Berry, son of Thomas Helm Berry by Betty Sanders Babcock, in1969: John R. Berry was given substantial cash money, the proceeds from the sale of property, by James Warren Berry (Note: Adaline Berry signed on this sale) in 1873. He left early the next Winter. His father never heard of him again.
It is unknown how he got to Idaho, but speculation that he went first to Oregon, where 7 years later his Aunt Nancy Tatom's children were living when James Gaskin Berry's Will was probated in 1881. (Florence's note: I'm speculating that John H. Berry, James Warren Berry's oldest brother, was in Oregon since 1859, when he took his last herd of cattle to California.) The community of Hubbard Oregon, was settled by Hubbards from Christian and Hopkins Counties in Kentucky. All of James Gaskin Berry's children, except Thomas Helm Berry, were born in Hopkins County, Ky., and James Gaskin Berry's family still lived there. Hubbard is about 10 miles from Silverton, Oregon, where John's future wife Mary Hubbard was born, and about 25 miles from Independence, where Nancy Berry Tatom's daughters lived after Nancy died.
He went to Idaho as a single man and tried to make living raising and racing horses. John caught wild horses, brought down from Canada. The horses were shipped by way of the Oregon Short-Line Railroad, from Payette Lakes area to Layton, Utah where William Himes Evans raised and trained horses, and sold them, along with the help of his nephew, William Evans and some of William's brothers. (See Notes for William Himes Evans). At some time John must have failed and lost money in this venture. His last employment ended when he fell and broke his hip while doing janitorial work at the age of 80.

From History of Dade County and its People
"There is probably no better known and more loved man in north Dade County than Uncle Tom Berry, the subject of this sketch. He was born in the county on the fine farm he now owns June 17th, 1841, over three-quarters of a century ago, and is proud to be a citizen of good old Dade County. His father, James G. Berry, was a native of Kentucky, where he early married Miss Mary Finley, who was born in South Carolina....."
"Thomas H. Berry was given 160 acres of good land by his father and took care of both his parents in their declining years. He was married October 28th, 1883, to Miss Berdit Samantha Smith, a native of Cass County, Missouri, and born Dec. 4th, 1850, a daughter of James Monroe and Cynthia Ann (Morris) Smith, natives of Tennesee and Kentucky, respectively.
