Howard Finley is buried in Cane Run Cemetery near Carbondale, Hopkins Co., Ky. His grave is marked by a small stone but was still legible in 1998. The cemetery is abandoned and one would need a guide to find it. Stone says "Howard Finley d. Sept. 4, 1840, 73 years." He moved to Hopkins County, Ky., in 1804.
The following is from the Hopkins County, Kentucky "Heritage Book" that the county Genealogical and Historical Societies published jointly in 1988. The information was contributed by Mary Hart Finley.
"Howard Finley was born in North Carolina in 1767 and died in Hopkins County in 1840. He came to this area in the early 19th Century and settled in what is now known as the Carbondale and Southards area. At one time the Finley acreage extended from there to Richland. To this day a section of Highway 112 is known as the Finley Levee. Howard Finley's wife was Betty Ann Helm. The settlement of Howard Finley's estate as recorded in 1840 included cash on hand $102.12, many tools and necessities for everyday living and nine slaves. The total value was $1,300. However, the land later proved to have valuable coal deposits....No trace of the Finley house(s) remain...."
Notes for Elizabeth Betsy Ann Helm:
Elizabeth Helm's father is possibly Thomas Helm, who conveyed a parcel of land on Richland Creek in Hopkins Co., dated April 15, 1819 to Howard Finley. This parcel was reconveyed by Deed Book 10, pages 156 and 157, October 17, 1855 to Thomas Helm Finley, of Hopkins County, his 1/10th part of Howard Finley's estate.
