Notes for John Swearingen:
Date of Birth for John Swearingen is in doubt, as his date of marriage, recorded in Queen Anne Parish Records, (Present-day Prince George's County at Leland) shows February 9, 1715, making him 17 years old at date of marriage.
Prince George's County Deeds Book E, f. 615:
On May 3, 1718, John Swearingen purchased from Benjamin Hall, 138 acres of a tract named Rileys Neglect, which adjoined a tract called Darnalls Grove.
PG County Deeds Book J. f. 693: Sold 93 acres of Rileys Neglect in 1725, for 60 pounds. Wife Mary relinquished her dower right.
PG County Deeds Book T. f. 502: Sold 45 acres more or less of Rileys Neglect in 1727, for 30 pounds. Wife Mary relinquished her dower right.
The next year, John Swearingen moved his family to Frederick/Montgomery County, Maryland, as evidence by a Deed dated October 30, 1738, Prince Georges County Deed Book T, f. 688. He leased two tracts of land from The huge estate of John Bradford, comprised of 4892 Acres in 1728. Samuel Hyde, of London, leased to John Swearingen, two parcels. The first, for 126 acres was rented for 1 pound 5 shillings 2 pence, to be paid yearly at the plantation leased to John Smith, also a part of Bradfords Rest. John Swearingen was to plant 126 apple trees within seven years, have the orchard fenced and kept from destruction, keep all houses, fences and enlosures repaired. The lease was in effect during the natural life of John Swearingen himself, his wife Mary Swearingen, and during the natural life of Thomas Swearingen, son of John and Mary Swearingen.
The second lease was for an additional 115 acres of Bradfords Rest, for 1 pound 3 shillings and 115 apple trees within seven years. This lease was to be in effect during the natural life of John Swearingen, Jr., son of John and Mary Swearingen, and during the life of Ann Swearingen, daughter of John and Mary, and during the life of Kezia Swearingen, daughter of the same. This Deed found in Frederick County Deed Book F. f. 180. Following this lease was an assignment by John Swearingen to Thomas Swearingen for 1 pound 3 shillings, "as an alienation fee on the within mentioned land for the use of George Plater, Esquire."
Samuel Hyde of London, from whom John Swearingen obtained these leases, is said to be his mother's brother. Not independently verified.
In 1756 John Swearingen sold all of his crop of tobacco, corn, cattle, hoggs, horses, table chairs, chests, feather beds, furniture, saw, jointer, gun iron potts, casks, frying pan to his "beloved sons Thomas Swearingen and Aaron Prather (Note: son-in-law) FC Deeds F. f 179. Later he sold a negro, horses, cattle hoggs, household goods, working tools and bedding. FC Deeds L. f.41.
