Notes for William Ferrell:
From History of Ashland County, Ohio by George William Hill, M.D., published by Williams Brothers, 1880: William Ferrell, son of Obediah Ferrell, was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in 1812. He came to what is now Ashland county, with his parents in August, 1816. On April 18, 1844, he was married to Mary Huffman, a daughter of an old pioneer family. To them have been born eleven children, six sons and five daughters. One daughter died in infancy, and Obediah on February 15, 1868, at the age of twelve. All are settled in life, except Daniel, George W., Lilly and Lewis, who live with their parents on the old homestead. Mr. Ferrell is a prominent citizen of Ashland county, and is honored and respected by all who know him.
Census, below contradicts this biography, as he would have been born in 1820, and therefore not in Ashland, but in Beaver County, Pa. Tombstone corroborates Ashland County biography.
Tombstone says 1812 - William - 1890, 1821 - Mary - 1907, 1855 - Hulbert - 1869. Picture does not identify cemetery.
Ashland County Census, M593|1169 p.579A 1870 shows William Ferrell as age 50, which would make his dob 1820. dates for Children are extrapolated from Census. He would have been 58.
There is a Hulbert Ferrell buried with William and Mary, and Lewis. His dates are 1855-1869.
NOTE: Names and dates of birth of children need verification. There is conflicting information from various sources.
A source says William and Mary Ann are buried in Savannah Cemetery. Another source says Vermillion Cemetery. Needs verification.

Notes for John Ferrell:
From a History of Ashland County, Ohio, George William Hill, M.D. Pub. Williams Books, 1880. "John Ferrell, son of Obediah, was born in Beaver county, Pennsylvania, in 1816. When he was but three months old, his father moved to Ohio and settled in Ashland county, three miles northwest of Ashland, on a farm adjoining Mr. Burgett. They commenced life in a log cabin, he remaining with his parents until the death of his father in 1844; his mother lived three years longer and died in 1847. The subject of this sketch was married in 1850, to Eliza Gries, by whom he had five sons and five daughters. Mr. Ferrell now resides in Clearcreek township, with his family around him, enjoying the reward that energy and industry are sure to bring." Note: in an article about Mr. George Burgett from the same book, cited above, Mr. Burgett's cabin was noticed as the first, lone cabin, which made up the town of Uniontown as it was called. So dense was the forest they were compelled to cut a way for the teams. Mr. Burgett was from Washington County, Pa., and went to Ashland County in 1813, three years before John Ferrell's father, Obediah.
From Ashland Press, Ashland Ohio, Thursday, June 8, 1893. Front Page: " Death of John Ferrell. John Ferrell departed this life last Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at his home on Center street, after an illness dating from Wednesday, since which time he lay in an almost insensible condition. The cause of Mr. Ferrell's death was Brights' disease, originating two years ago when he was afflicted with the grippe, since then he has been in ill health, but after all his last illness was short and his death was sudden.
Mr. Ferrell was a native of Pennsylvania, his birth occurring in Beaver county in 1816. He reached the advanced age of 77 before his death and spent only three months of those years in his native state. He moved to Ashland county with his father in 1816, and lived with his parents until his father's death in 1844. In 1850 he married Miss Eliza Gries, who still survives him, and whose brother, J.R. Gries, and wife of California, were here to attend the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Ferrell were the parents of ten children, seven of whom are living, viz., George, of Waukegan, Ill. Loren and Retta, of Utica Kan., Clara and Mary, who recently moved to Chicago, Irvin, of Salineville, O., and Mrs. Eva Mowery, of Ashland. The deceased was a brother of Lance Ferrell, of this place.
The deceased was a quiet, unoffensive, industrious citizen. By honest methods and hard work he accumulated considerable property and about ten years ago moved to Ashland from Clear Creek township to live the life of a retired farmer. He was held in high esteem by his former Clear Creek neighbors, many of whom were in attendance at his funeral. The services were held at the deceased's late residence Monday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. D.B. Duncan, of the Presbyterian church, spoke comforting words to the mourning family, and was listened to by many friends of the deceased."
Ohio Gazette, Tuesday, June 6, 1893. "The funeral of John Ferrell who died on last Saturday took place yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late residence on Center Street. Rev. D.B.Doncan conducted the services."
Same issue: "George Ferrel, who resides near Chicago, and his sister Mary, who has been with Secretary W. T. Alberson for the past year, are in town, having come to attend the funeral of their father, John Ferrel."
Ashland Press, January 8, 1893 "A telegram was received at the Ohio building last evening announcing the death at Ashland of the venerable John Ferrel, a well known democrat. Mr. Ferrel's daughter, Miss Mary, is the stenographer of the Ohio board of World's Fair managers. She was called to her home in Ashland Thursday by a telegram stating that her father was dangerously sick.. (Chicago special to Plain Dealer.
He was appointed a Grand Juror for November Term, 1879, for Clear Creek Twp. Ashland Press, 23 October, 1879, Vol. XXXIV, No. 14
John's farm was called "Fountain Farm". Found in Range 17, Twp. 25, Sec. 33. He is listed as a grain and livestock raiser in 1874 Business Directory, Ashland County, Ohio. There is a sketch of "Fountain Farm" included in Caldwell's Atlas, dated 1874.
The following Deed, recording the purchase of land later occupied by the farm of John is found in Beaver Co., Pa., Deed book /?/, page 488. Note that the land cited is in Section 32, Range 17 Twp. 25. and is 1/4 section, NE 1/4. The Atlas shows Sec. 33, NW 1/4, some 40 acres. It is believed that the division of Clear Creek and Blooming Grove Twps., split John Ferrell's land right through the middle, leaving some in Clear Creek, and some in Blooming Grove Twp., some in Ashland Co., some in Richland Co.

According to his obituary he moved from his farm to Ashland City about 1883, where he built a large home on 20 acres at the intersection of Center Avenue (Loudenville Road), and Ferrell Avenues. A note on the back of a picture taken by Grand daughter Evelyn Garner who was in the house about 1928 says the house had 6 rooms and pantry on the ground floor, 12 rooms upstairs, 2 stairways, brick foundation, and cellar walls of stone. The home is known to have elegant and irreplaceable woodwork throughout. Some time after the death of Eliza Gries Ferrell, in 1913, her daughter Mary Priscilla and son-in-law Harry Winbigler bought the property from the Ferrell Estate and subdivided it into its present form, being called 'Ferrell Orchards'. Today the home shows the results of good maintenance for more than 100 years, and has been designated part of an historic district by the City of Ashland. Its address today (year 2000) is 831 Center Street, Ashland, OH
No will or administration of estate records have been found for John or Eliza Gries Ferrell.

Ashland Press, November 19, 189996 "Mrs. John Ferrell returned last Thursday from a visit with her children in Kansas."
From Ashland Press, Ashland, Ohio, September 15, 1909, page 5 column 6
Mrs. Ferrel, mother of Mrs. H. J. Winbigler, with whom she resides at the Ferrel homestead on South Center Street, met with a serious accident last Tuesday.
As she was about to descend the stairs she slipped in some manner and fell the full length of the stairs, sustaining severe bruises. Fortunately no bones were broken. Mrs. Ferrel is over eighty years of age and has suffered two strokes of paralysis. It is thought likely that she became dizzy as she looked down the stairs and so lost her balance and fell.
Mrs. Ferrel was unconscious for two days and is still confined to her bed in a serious condition. Mrs. Ferrell's advanced age renders her injuries the more serious.
A week later, as recorded in the Ashland Press, below, her son Lorin came from Kansas to see her for a last visit. She lived four more years, but Lorin died soon after his return to Kansas.

Mr. Ferrell lives on what is called the Short farm, near the old homestead. Both himself and wife are members of the Lutheran church.
Lance Ferrell had 120 acres, called Grand View in the 1874 Atlas of Milton Two., Ashland Co.
From Ashland Press, Wednesday, July 10, 1901. Front Page
Lance Ferrell was ill some over a week. A post-mortem was also held in his case, and his intestines were found to be in a knot. It was conducted by his physician, Dr. Fridline, and Dr. Ash.
Mr. Ferrell was a citizen of this vicinity all his life and was well known to a large number of people. He was a devoted father and husband, and in his family he will be missed especially.
Mr. Ferrell was born in Milton township Aug. 19, 1829. Just 20 years later he married Susan Nelson. To them were born eight children, but only Mrs. Ferrell and one daughter, Zettie, wife of Harvey Heifner, survive Mr. Ferrell. Mr. Ferrell lived for many years on his farm in Milton township until he moved to Ashland. Since then he has been engaged in buying and selling horses, he being a splendid judge of horses. He joined the Lutheran church many years ago. His pastor, Rev. A.H. Smith conducted the funeral services at the home Tuesday at 2 o'clock, when many neighbors gathered to pay their last respects.
Florence's Note: Lance Ferrell's only son Forrest died in 1863. He would have no descendants bearing the Ferrell surname.

Notes for Susannah Nelson:
Information on Susan Nelson's family taken from L.D.S. files, submitted by William Robert Wetsel of Parma, Ohio. Not independently verified.
Ashland Press, December 16, 1903 "Susan Nelson Ferrel was born in Northampton county, PA., May 7, 1831. Early in life she came to Ohio with her parents who were among the early pioneer settlers of Ashland county. August 20, 1849, she was married to Lance Ferrell. Eight children were born to them, seven daughters, Sarah, Laura, Ella, Nettie, Cora, Winnie and Zettie, and one son, Forrest. All are dead except one daughter, Mrs. Harvey Heifner, who lives on the corner of Walnut street and Claremont avenue. Mrs. Hannah Urie, of Milton Township, is a sister of the deceased. Mrs. Ferrell was a member of the Lutheran Church forty-one years. She died at her home in South Ashland, Wednesday, December 7, 1903, aged 72 years, 7 months, and 2 days. Funeral services were held Friday, in charge of Rev. A.H. Smith of Trinity Lutheran Church.
The husband, Lance Ferrell, died two years ago, fifty-two years after their marriage. A remarkable coincidence in connection with the death of Mr. and Mrs. Ferrell is that they both died at exactly the same hour of the day--2:15 p.m."

41. Elizabeth4 Ferrell (Obediah3, James2, James1) was born Abt. 1818 in Milton Twp. Ashland Co., Ohio, and died September 22, 1874 in Ganges, Richland Co., Ohio. She married Isaac J. Taylor October 07, 1837 in Richland Co., Ohio, Vol. 3., pg. 171. He was born Unknown, and died Bef. February 1851.
Notes for Elizabeth Ferrell:
It is possible that Isaac Taylor died before February 27th, 1851. Elizabeth Taylor alone signed QC deed to Obediah Ferrell (Jr.) for her share of inheritance,( probate 1851-1858). At this time she was living in Sandusky County, and signed on the same day as her sister Mary Ann Huffman. Recorded and filed, 1858.
Possibly additional children.
Film with record of Deaths at Mansfield, Richland Co., Genealogical Society says " Taylor, Elizabeth, d. 22 Sep 1874, r. Bloominggrove Twp., 85 yr. 1 mo. 12 da., widowed, d. Ganges OH, b. Pa, housekeeping, congestion of the lungs. If this is her record she was born 1789? not likely
Notes for Isaac J. Taylor:
Probably went to California for the goldrush, along with Adam Gries, Eli Cline (husband of Mary Ann Gries), Jacob Kaiser Gries, (who later married Elizabeth Tourbett Foulkes, wife of another Cline who went to California), John Gries (who returned to Ohio), andGeorge (Washington)Gries. His wife, Elizabeth Ferrell Taylor signed alone on QC deed to Obediah Ferrell, Elizabeth's brother, on February 27th, 1851.

42. Mary Ann4 Ferrell (Obediah3, James2, James1) was born January 15, 1820 in Ashland, Ohio, and died November 12, 1898 in Galion Ohio. She married Benjamin C. Huffman January 03, 1843 in Richland Co., Ohio, Vol. 4, pg. 128, son of Daniel Huffman and Natalie Holmes. He was born 1816 in Pennsylvania, and died 1871 in Ashland Co., Ohio.
Notes for Mary Ann Ferrell:
She is called "Polly" in her father's Will.
Mary Ann's gravestone is listed under "Huffman" and reads Mary Ann Ferrell, wife of Benjamin C., died 1891, age 76 years. According to her Will (see below) her date of death was 1898. According to a descendant she was living with her son, Obediah Layton Huffman of Galion, Crawford Co., Ohio at the time of her death.
Obituary from Ashland Press dated November 16, 1898: Mrs. Mary Ann Huffman died last Saturday night at the home of her son, Dr. O.L. Huffman, in Galion, and was buried here Tuesday. She was born in this county January 15, 1820, and leaves five sons and two daughters.
According to a descendant her will stated that she resided in Polk Twp. and died on Nov. 12, 1898. Her heirs were: Sarah E. Overmyer, Rollersville, Ohio; Daniel, Mt. Myr, Iowa; Rowena Patterson, Mt. Ayr, Iowa; William O., Savannah, Ohio; B.F., Norwalk, Ohio, G.W. Defiance, Ohio; O.L., Galion, Ohio. Prior to her husband's death they lived on the original farm called "Sunny Side", Range 17, Twp. 25, Sec. 23, near Savannah, Ohio purchased from his father Daniel. Daniel died in 1876. Both Benjamin C. and Mary Ann Ferrell Huffman have a single stone engraved with dates beside Benjamin F. and Ida Huffman (Their son in Ashland Cemetery). Will of Benjamin C. indicates that his grave was moved to Ashland Cemetery about June, or July, 1877. I can only assume that he may have been buried in a cemetery near the farm in Clear Creek Township, near Savannah, Ohio. This Cemetery no longer exists. Most or all graves were moved, at what time I do not know.

She was born July 1814 in Hanover Twp., Beaver Co., Pa., and died November 02, 1861 in BloomingGrove Twp., Richland Co., Ohio.
Notes for Peter Ferrell:
Peter Ferrell is in Weller Twp. Richland Co., 1850 Census, number 270B.
Peter Ferrell is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Blooming Grove Twp., Richland Co. "Peter Ferrell - husband of Sarah, died 18 Oct. 1871, aged 65 years, 3 months.". Death records for Richland County say he died in 1874 of Typhoid fever, and was age 65 yrs. Cass Twp.
Census for Blooming Grove Twp., Richland County, Ohio, 1860 gives us names and ages of the children as follows:
Clarissa 22 teacher
Silas 21 laborer
William L. 18 laborer
John W. 15
Susan 8
Elanor 3
Martin 1
Sarah died November 2, 1861.
Census for 1870, Blooming Grove gives names and ages for his children as follows:
Peter Ferrel, 61
Susan, 50 (Serlinda? second wife?)
William, 28 (William L.)
Susan, 27 (Could this be William's wife?)
John, 24 (John W.)
Sarah, 19 (could this be Susan in 1860 Census?)
Eleanor, 13
Joseph, 11 (could this be Martin in 1860 Census?)
Clarissa and Silas have left the family home.
Marriage License from the Probate Court of Richland County, taken November 1, 1861 or 1862, (writing is illegible) shows a second marriage with Serlina Taylor. Both of legal age. The License was returned with certification that that the marriage took place, signed by John Burke, Member of the Gospel, on November 11, 1862.
When Peter Lance, Peter Ferrell's grandfather died in 1833, Peter Ferrell bought his grandfather's silver pocket watch at the estate sale.
Letters and Bond filed in the Estate of Peter Ferrell on October 26, 1874. Amon Chew, A.S. Chew, and George Washington Ferrell were sureties.
Final settlement was made by Silas Ferrell and John W. Ferrell in Peter's estate Dec. 8, 1878. His heirs each received $17.31. Since the list of heirs does not match the children as stated in the census, it is possible that some of Peter's children died of typhoid fever when Peter himself died, and these heirs are grandchildren or spouses of his children.
S. Ferrell
John Ferrell
Sophieanna Ferrell
Elizabeth Ferrell
Clarissa Qwinn
Silas Ferrell
Two interesting entries into Silas' accounting of Peter's estate:
Received from Est. of J. Ferrell to Peter's estate, $40.00 on June 30, 1879
Received from Est. of O. Ferrell to Peter's estate, $413.25 on April 13, 1876.
Speculation is that these are payments from the estates of Peter's deceased brothers Jackson and Obediah, who had no issue. Law is that siblings or their descendants receive such.

Notes for Serlina Taylor:
Application for Marriage License at Probate County, Richland County, OH on November 1, 1862 and marriage by John Burke, on November 11, 1862, one year after the death of Sarah, Peter Ferrell's first wife. Sarah's death is put at November 2, 1861.
She appears in the Census (pg. 35C) for June 22, 1880, Cass Twp., Richland County Ohio, as a widow, living alone, 60 years old. Place of birth, Pennsylvania.
Susan (Serlina) Taylor Ferrell is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Cass Twp., Richland County, Ohio (pg. 26), March 8, 1890, at 79 years.

Notes for Sarah Pollock:
Buried in Presbyterian Churchyard, Blooming Grove Twp., Richland Co., OH. -" Sarah Ferrell - wife of Peter, died 2 Nov. 1861, aged 47 years, 5 mos., 15 days."
If the Census for 1860, showing a one-year old male child (either Joseph or Martin) is correct, then possibly Sarah died as a result of child-birth, as she would have been 46-47 when this last son was born.
