Generation No. 20
65. Nancy Mary20 Finley (Howard19, Thomas18, John17, James16, Alexander15, James14, John13, James12, Andrew Fyndlay11, John III Findley10, John Jr.9, John Sr.8, Andrew7, William6, Archibald5, Fearchar MacFinley4, Eugenius McFinley3, Fergus McFinlay2, Ruari1) was born August 19, 1798 in So. Carolina, and died March 21, 1892 in Morgan Twp., Dade Co., Mo.. She married James Gaskin Berry March 15, 1818 in Hopkins Co., Ky., son of John Berry and Elizabeth LNU. He was born December 07, 1792 in Kentucky, and died 1875 in Morgan Twp., Dade Co., Mo..
Notes for Nancy Mary Finley:
"Mary Finley Berry sewed for the community. Major Morgan of Civil War had his measurements taken in a hurry. He brought broad cloth and buttons. She was to buy lining. She cut out the suit and basted all by hand." Interview with Howard Berry, 1969, by Betty Babcock.
At Thomas Berry's home (by Frances Saborsch, daughter of Cytha Berry McConnell, and granddaughter of Thos. H. Berry) there was a camphor bottle brought on the trip, a clock on the mantle, a bible, hid out during the Civil War, and a speller that was used in Spelling 'B's, all brought from Carolinas by Nancy Mary Finley.
Notes for James Gaskin Berry:
Mentioned as son and heir of John Berry, Hopkins Co. Kentucky Will Book No. 1, page 207. Guardian Sam Woodson appointed as he was under age, April 15, 1811.
Served in War of 1812, from State of Kentucky, 11th Regiment, Caldwell's Kentucky Militia.
October 1, 1836 James G. Berry and Mary his wife sold 100 acres along Flat Creek in Hopkins County to John W. Rash for $300.00. John Warren Rash was James Gaskin Berry's nephew, son of his sister Patsy Berry.
Moved to Dade Co., Mo. in about 1836 with his wife, Nancy Mary Finley and several brothers-in-law. Purchased a total of 280 acres, between 1843 and 1859 in Mellville (Later Dadeville), Dade Co., Mo. Patent document numbers; MO5170__.227, MO5210__.003, MO5190__.079, MO5440__.195, and MO5590__.288. (Bureau of Land Management, G.L.O. (Cash Entry Sale). Others who made purchases in the same Twp. (32), Range (25) were: Thomas Hudson (His cousin), Jesse M. Finley (his brother-in-law), Stephen Gray, James H. Gaunt (possibly brother of future son-in-law John Mott Gaunt, pronounced 'Gant' by locals in 1999.)
James G. Berry and James Gaunt built the first grist-mill and saw-mill there in 1856.
Slave Census for Dade Co., Mo, 1850 shows ownership of one 22-year-old male slave, possibly Shed Berry (Shadrach), see below.
From History of Dade County and Her People, vol. 1, p 313. "Together this couple came to Dade County in 1836, bringing a family of six children. They made the trip overland with horse and wagon. This family were pioneers in every sense of the word.... They went to farming in the most approved manner of the times, which was primitive in those early days. There were no mills to grind what crops were raised so each farmer had to prepare his meal as best he could devise. Mr. Berry consructed different devises for this purpose, the most prominent of them being a stone grinding affair called a 'Thumping Dick."
Other familiar names who purchased land in the surrounding Twps. were: Twp. 31, John D. Ragsdale, Elijah McMillan, John C. Wetzel, John Finley, William McMillan, Twp. 30, Alex Ragsdale and Britain Finley.
From: History of Dade County and Its People.
"James G. Berry was successful in his farming operation and accumulated much good land, owning at one time over 400 acres. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, and served with valor under Col. Samuel Caldwell in the Eleventh United States Volunteers, and was discharged in 1813. He was a Whig and later a Republican in politics. James G. Berry was born Dec. 7th, 1792, and died in Dade County on the place now owned and occupied by his son, Thomas, in 1875, while his wife, who was born Aug. 19th, 1798, lived to be 94 years of age, dying March 21st, 1892.
(From Goodspeed's History of State of Missouri), 1880, pg. 456. 'During the Civil War the court house was used a portion of the time by the Union troops as a fortification and was so occupied on the 6th day of October, 1863 when the town was captured by the Confederate troops under command of Gen. Joe Shelby on which occasion his soldiers carried the public records (except certain ones which some of the rebel soldiers wished to have destroyed) out of the court house, and deposited them with Judge Nelson McDowell, at his residence, and then set the building on fire and burned it down.'
The following is from 'History of Dade County and its people' no date. "School districts then organized under the law. Levy was made to run three months school next year, also for incidental expenses, flooring the house and buying a stove. Mr. Pyle then proposed to teach the next school and wait for his pay until the taxes were levied and collected. This proposition was accepted and the school taught. At tax-paying time the taxes were promptly paid by all except J. G. Berry, who was opposed to the organization and levy. He was sued for his school tax, the board obtained judgement and execution against him, then sold a horse under execution for $3.00 to pay said tax.......Later a move was made and carried to change the site one-half mile and to build a new school house. In this wrangle two of the board had a fist fight, but proceeded to move the site and build a new school house....This district has turned out some very efficient teachers."

Children of Nancy Finley and James Berry are:
75 i. John H.21 Berry, born January 09, 1819 in Hopkins, Ky.; died Aft. 1880. He married Pareija Rubys April 20, 1843 in Dade Co., Mo.; born Unknown; died Unknown.
Notes for John H. Berry:
The "Oregon Train", which left Independence Missouri for Oregon Territory in 1843 included many families from Dade and Polk Counties. There were two lists of these Pioneers kept by their "Captains". At Fort Hall the train broke into two groups, one of which continued on to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The other turned toward California. In the group bound for Oregon can be found the name Chesley (CHesley) G. Gray. In the group bound for California can be found these names: Henry Pile (Pyle), James Gannt (Gaunt) and Philip Ruby (Rubey). Chesley's older brother, Wilson Gray was married to John H. Berry's sister, Margaret Amanda Berry. James Gaunt's brother, John Mott Gaunt was married to Mary E. Berry, another of John H. Berry's sisters, and Henry Pile (Pyle) was possibly brother to Emily Pyle, John Mott Gaunt's second wife. These list are incomplete, and I believe that John H. Berry was part of the Oregon Train, with his wife, Pareija Rubys (Rubey, Ruby) whom he married on April 19, 1843. There are no Rubys found in Dade County, but there are Rubys found in Hopkins Co., Ky.
At this time (April 1999) there is little information about the life of John H.(Helm) Berry. Two events are recorded here so they will not be lost before further research is completed. These stories were told to Betty Sanders Babcock by Howard Berry, oldest son of Thomas Helm Berry, 1034 Monroe, Kansas City, Mo., in an interview in 1969.
John Berry made two trips to California with herd of cattle in 1849 and 1859. They circled the wagons around the big oaks in Dadeville. Tracks still visible many years later. Mother used to go out and look at them and weep. Hard to load the wagons sufficiently full for the trip to California. Used ox teams. Had to take wagons apart to make raft to cross river. Milk cow went ahead and was taken by Indians. Records of John H. Berry either say 'went to California' or 'went to Oregon'.
April 30th, 1879, Book 29, page 130. Sheriffs Deed in Partition: Margaret A. Gray was petitioner against John H. Berry. Sarah J. Swingle, joined with her husband, Marion Swingle, James W. Berry, Edward L. Berry, Diana W. Bebee joined with her husband Jno. T. Bebee, Nancy J. Tatum joined with her husband James Tatum, Thomas H. Berry and Mary Berry. Suit required publication for three months in Greenfield Gazette, was to force sale of James Gaskin Berry's land, except for 12 acres as it couldn't be partitioned. Sale to John L. Landers at public auction for $340.00 took place in October, 1879.
