USA, and died September 21, 1961 in Saint George, Utah. He married Josephine Adeline Berry June 01, 1922 in Bingham Canyon, Utah, USA, daughter of Alonzo Berry and Eliza Evans. She was born November 25, 1893 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, and died April 21, 1987 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.
Notes for Roland Irving Ferrell:
Birth order and birth dates of children of Lorin and Sarah Ferrell obtained from copy of family Bible in possession of Eva Ferrell, certified by Chesney I. Floyd, member of firm of Floyd and Floyd, Bonded and licensed Abstractors, County of Ness, State of Kansas, April 12, 1960.
Roland was awarded a scholarship good for any of the classes in the Preparatory, Normal or College Departments of Cooper College in Sterling, Kansas, August 15, 1904 as he had "Taken the highest grades in the Common School of Ness Co., Kansas"
According to his own testimony, Roland, after graduation wished to continue his schooling but his father, who by that time was suffering from Tuberculosis, insisted that he either work at farming or leave home. For a few years he moved in with his Aunt Rhett (Gardner) and later learned the printing trade from his older brother, Willard and Ray, both of whom were in the newspaper business. Willard, Ray, and sister Alberta were all married and living away from home. His sister Eva helped keep the books, and his mother, Sarah Ellen, was busy with three younger brothers, John, Don and Lorin. Roland left Kansas for Utah some time after October, 1909 when he signed his name to the court document agreeing that sister Eva Ferrell should administer the estate of his father, and again for receipt of his share of Lorin Ferrell's estate, which was $128.39.
His own story, as told to Florence, was that he first lived in Provo, Utah for a little more than a year. He boarded with a local family, and when he became aware that the father of his host family had designs to recruit him as a son-in-law, Roland moved on to Bingham Canyon, where he worked first carrying mail on horseback throughout the region, and later as a printer at the Press Bulletin Newspaper until he was called into the service.
The following appeared in a Bingham Canyon newspaper, date unknown: "R.I. Ferrell, who has resided in Bingham for four years, and who has carried mail most of the time and was printer for the Press-Bulletin during the past year, left Monday for Tucson, Arizona, where he will enter the State University and take a special course of training provided for officers in the service of the United States forces.
Ferrell is a native of the Sunflower State, but he has been in Utah so long that he might be classed as an old timer. He is a good fellow. In fact there are not many better fellows to be found. He is capable, honest and companionable. He is well educated and is a man of wide reading and is well versed on many matters of general interest at this time. He belongs to the intellectual strata of humanity and is a man of unimpeachable integrity. He is also a man of courage and is not of the type who would falter in the face of danger, and withal, he has youth, energy and ability, a trinity which augurs for success. He will be missed in Bingham, but his friends here feel sure that he will give a good account of himself when he faces the Huns on the field of carnage."
According to his own testimony, while in Arizona he learned radio transmission and repair. After discharge he returned to Bingham as a mail carrier, married, and fathered his first two children. Some time afte the birth of daughter Marjo, about 1924, he bought a house from the area in Bingham Canyon which was scheduled to be covered by mining slag, and transported by highway to Davis County, North of Salt Lake City, to the hamlet of Centerville, where his wife Josephine had several years earlier (before their marriage) purchased a lot across the road from her mother's family home. The house was deposited there, and became the birth-place of his next 6 children.
After the birth of Howard, in October, 1934, he moved his family to Salt Lake City, to have better access to Secondary school for the oldest children. He continued his work at the Post Office. The last daughter, Evalyn, was born in Salt Lake City.

Notes for Josephine Adeline Berry:
Here is the place for a short Eulogy, read by her son-in-law, Joseph Cannariato, at her funeral.
"My brothers and sisters-in-law and my wife have asked me to talk about "Gramma Ferrell" - Josephine Berry Ferrell.
A long-time friend called her the embodiment of the west; a true pioneer lady who always found the strength and resourcefulness to do what she had to do. Her mission was to nurture. She was spirited, imaginative, passionate, and always had room for another in her house as well as in her heart.
Some of her children remember other traits about her: the way she called them in to dinner with a high-pitched whistle, the way she taught them opera as well as nursery rhymes, her love of walking everywhere; and where she couldn't walk she would fly or drive.
When she was finally wheelchair bound, whe would push herself around the halls until she earned the title of "our greatest navigator" from one of her attendants.
Her mission was to nurture. She wanted twelve children, but stopped at nine, and always was ready to provide for more. Her children and grandchildren remember her canning fruit, baking bread, and preparing pounds of fruitcake. In this way she taught them about sharing the bounty of the earth with others.
She was resourceful. She could fix a broken electrical cord, swing a hammer, crank a car. She was the first girl on her block to wear bloomers and ride a bicycle. She went to college when most women didn't, and she didn't major in Home Economics. She loved mathematics, taught school, was Post Mistress in Bingham Canyon, audited for the Department of the Interior, War Department, the Internal Revenue Service, and later, after one retirement, went to work again, preparing taxes and keeping books. She acquired and read a six-volume "Great Religions of the World" after the age of seventy.
All this while maintaining a strict code of behavior - honesty and loyalty.
She was passionate. Next to her childtren, her greatest love was music. Music was part of her every chore, every hour, every day, but especially on Saturday nights.
Josephine Adeline Berry Ferrell, born November 25th, 1893, died April 21, 1987, believed knowledge was incomplete, truth only partial, and love imperfect; but that new light was always waiting to break through to our hearts and minds to enlighten our ways.
She didn't just exist; she was alive, caring, working, laughing, telling stories and singing. she was proud of her past and of her people. She loved her family and looked to a joyful future. We are grateful that we had her for ninety-three years. We love her and will miss her with all the passion she gave us.
