Martin owned a patent on 600 acres on Laton's Creek, a branch of Buckhorn Creek in Mecklengurg Co., Va. Vol. 5, pg 450 (Nov. 9, 1753).
About 1757 all of the brothers left the Mecklenburg Area, John went to South Carolina, and the others, Martin, William and Charles went to Augusta, Ga., and Richard, unknown. John joined the Continental Army in South Carolina. The three who went to Augusta, Martin, William and Charles, became part of the Augusta Loyalist Militia, along with approximately 1100 other Tories. When Augusta fell to Continental troops, some 250 persons from various counties, including Martin, William and Charles Wetherford were put on trial and ordered out of Augusta.
An Act of Confiscation and Banishment was issued in Augusta on May 4, 1782, found in State Archives, Revolutionary Records of Ga., Vol l (1769-1782), pg 386 declared them to be banished "from this State forever". It gave them 60 days in which to go, otherwise they would be jailed, or expedited "beyond the Seas to some of the British King's dominion".
Martin went first to Florida, and when the Spanish took Florida, he went to the Bahamas, where according to some researchers, had another family, as recorded here.
